City Of Manchester Airport is the second airport to serve the North West city of Manchester. Situated to the north of the city between Bolton and Bury it has a perfect catchment area to offer more flights and destinations to the people of Manchester and Northern England. In 2016 City Of Manchester only handled around 1000 less passengers than Manchester Airport itself and that number is expected to drop even more in 2017 with more holiday flights and long haul destinations announced.

The airport is a major hub for Easyjet, Flybe, Monarch and Ryanair whilst it is a focus city for British Airways, Jet2, Thomas Cook, TUI and Virgin Atlantic. City Of Manchester Airport has 2 Terminals which are then split up into 2 separate piers. T1 A +B and T2 A+B.

History[edit | edit source]

On the 21st August 1991, the city of Manchester celebrated the opening of its new regional airport Manchester-Bury airport (As what it was first called). The first airline to use the airport was the 3x daily flight to London-Heathrow with British Airways and their 737s along with British Airways to Isle of Man using their ATP aircraft. After a few months Ryanair started 3x daily flights to Dublin which now meant that the airport was served by 2 airlines as it looked to grow as a regional airport.

After a year of slow growth, in the autumn of 1992, British Midland started services to London-Heathrow and Belfast which brought competition to the British Airways route that was extremely popular and had been moved to 4x flights a day.

2 years later saw the first charter airline to fly from CMA on holiday routes to mainland Spain and France.

In the new millennium the airport changed its name from Manchester-Bury to City of Manchester Airport which it is now know as and famously all over the world. With increasing number of traffic used by business travelers British Airways announced flights to Munich, Berlin, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Ryanair also started flights to Shannon.
